Mars Season 3 Release Date on Nat Geo? Renewal Status and News
Mars Season 3
Was Mars cancelled or renewed for season 3? When does it start on NatGeo? Now that season 2 is over, fans are wondering if the show will continue for another season or not. In this post, we have summarized everything we know so far about the next season.
What Is Mars About?
This season on MARS, the story delves into the boundaries between science and industry on an isolated, unforgiving frontier. Throughout history, there’s been a constant tug of war between human motivations and interests with profitability on one end of the spectrum and exploration on the other. When becoming interplanetary, can humans break the chain, or are they doomed to repeat the same mistakes in this new world?
MARS picks up five years after the conclusion of Season 1, following the successful maiden mission to the Red Planet when the original International Mars Science Foundation (IMSF) crew struggled to safely land on and create an initial settlement. It’s now the year 2042, and IMSF has established a fully-fledged colony, Olympus Town, but they cannot finance the Mars expedition alone. Doors of opportunity have swung wide open to the private sector, but tensions arise among original mission-driven scientists and miners sent by the for-profit corporation, Lukrum Industries, which create a new world of challenges for everyone on the Red Planet.
On the scripted front, the series tackles seemingly everyday occurrences – pregnancy, break ups, new romances, epidemics, breakdowns, power outages, injuries, exercise, mealtimes and socializing. But when they occur approximately 34 million isolated miles from Earth – where there is no escape – they are anything but ordinary. And while the mission-driven scientists, who first set foot on Red Planet nine years earlier, initially are alarmed by their new neighbors, some soon find themselves understanding and comingling with ‘the other side.’ Life on Mars intensifies when scientists who are searching for new life get upended by Lukrum’s mining mission; the worst natural disaster hits home; the first-generation Martian baby enters the new world; and when loved ones draw their last breath.
The MARS cast is comprised of returning actors from Season 1 along with several newcomers, including Jihae (Mortal Engines), Jeff Hephner (Chicago Med, Code Black) and Esai Morales (Ozark, NYPD Blue).
On the documentary front, present-day vignettes draw parallels to the future happenings on Mars by looking at some of the dire issues facing Earth’s last frontier – the Arctic. This includes a spectrum of events that currently are compromising life on Earth – and could plague us in the future as we become an interplanetary species: drilling, glacial melting, rising sea level and indigenous health epidemics which surface when the permafrost melts.
On-camera experts – dubbed our ‘Big Thinkers’ – once again navigate the audience through the struggles and opportunities awaiting humans on Mars. This elite group includes some of the biggest names in human exploration, technology, the environment and social science, such as Elon Musk, SpaceX CEO; Andy Weir, bestselling author of The Martian and Artemis; Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief; Leland Melvin, former NASA astronaut; Michio Kaku, theoretical physicist and futurist; Antonia Juhasz, leading oil and energy expert; Naomi Klein, bestselling author, activist and award-winning journalist on climate change; Casey Dreier, director of space policy at the Planetary Society; Lucianne Walkowicz, Astrobiology Chair at the Kluge Center of the Library of Congress and astronomer at the Adler Planetarium; and Bill Nye, CEO of The Planetary Society.

I am very disappointed that you have chosen to cancel such an innovative and timely show such as Mars. I remember a time when I would race to the television the minute I heard the National Geographic theme song. It announced something exciting and unknown, was about to be revealed. Now your daily schedule is filled with insipid shows like, "Biker Chicks: Leather and Lace! Very sad!! You should rename your network to "Panders to Mediocrity", or PanMed! Very, very sad!!
Why are all worthwhile things "Cancelled" Great series! Who in Nat Geo cancelled this.. Does anybody have a contact name so we can show them the error of their thinking.
In an era where both public support and career aspiration are vital to the future of space exploration, shows like Mars can provide a bird's eye view into the science and people necessary to make it a reality. National Geographic must see that the cultural value of a show like this transcends profit, much as initial forays into scientific broadcasting once did. Please tell me you won't forego this opportunity in favor of pandering to the lowest common denominator…
PLEASE bring back Mars for Season 3!!!!! We miss it!!!
Hard to believe this show was cancelled. If National Geographic doesn't renew this… I hate to say it… Hopefully Netflix will understand this series has a good following, and buy out the rights to this show like others in the past.
Totally screwed up to cancel such a good show
PLEASE renew Mars for season 3. Love this show. Was getting so good.
Failure to renew Mars series is a mistake. It is one of the best and realistic focus-dramas ever produced. Instead you give us crime, drug, and gang shows. I do not watch these shows and will not let my kids watch.
Eye opening Entertainment… Please .. Please renew Mars for season 3.
Aw man the show is canceled, it was pretty good, that really too bad. Dealt with cool real-world stuff. Maybe Elon will buy the show? It's generating some pretty good interest for SpaceX's program.
I'm very disappointed that this show is gone. It was an adult look at space exploration instead of a childish fantasy. It only touched on the real issues we would face and then Nat. Geo. Dropped the ball. What else is new?
Very disappointed that there will be no season 3 of Mars. One of the best shows ever.
Please renew Mars for season 3. Love the show, love the cast. Love the challenges of living on another planet. Bring back Mars for season 3. I want to see the garden grow, additional housing, research, progress, challenges etc.
I loved Mars docuseries on Nat Geo…Please encourage a season 3……..
Not happy. Many people want a 3rd season.
Great show, and wish there was another season. Maybe they just ran out of the known science on the topic for the documentary segments, and would have to be just pure sci-fi this point forward? That would be okay by me! As it was, the documentary portions were getting boring, and it felt like they were stretching out the segments. I would love to watch this all again re-edited with all of it stripped out.
Why do they always cancel the good shows and leave the boring ones on???????
Really disappointed it was cancelled, it was very interesting and it was on my "record" list, bummer…….
Agree. Really disappointed that Nat Geo failed to renew the series. This was a good show and did a great job in showing many of the issues that will be faced as we move forward in exploring and colonizing Mars. The mix of story and documentary helped my students understand where we are in space exploration and helped generate interest in What next? and How do we get there?
I liked 'Mars'. I looked forward to season 3. But there have been some great big changes in network and cable and streaming internet television. The behemoth. Disney now controls National Geographic. Disney is enormous. 60 Billion Dollars large. So, what's going to be on Disney Plus Streaming? Maybe if we subscribe and beg 'Mars' may see the screen again. However, do not count on it.
MARS is so damn good! Please reconsider and renew this wonderful series. Please
IF THIS IS TRUE I AM GONNA BE ONE PISSED SPACE JUNKY. WTF. Someone please call Oprah and tell her to put it on OWN then. I was becoming addicted too. I also loved the writing in this since I am a fiction writer. OPRAH, WHERE ARE YA?
Not seeing a lot of comments from those who are OK with cancellation, if any. This was really a bright spot in popular media. Would like to see another season or something similar on another topic. BTW climate disruption is becoming less political every day. The consequences of ignorance are existential.
Please renew Mars for season 3. I really like this show!!
I am sad please Netflix bring back this show.
Looks like Lukrum pulled funding for Mars Season 3.
@jrome LOL, screw Netfail. Amazon would be a better pitch.
Hey Amazon–Here's your chance to do a solid for your viewers!
I vote yes. Hey Mr. Bezos, isn't Mars one of your pet projects?
Amazon Prime Video???
we are waiting or season 3 come on.
