What Is Mars About?
This season on MARS, the story delves into the boundaries between science and industry on an isolated, unforgiving frontier. Throughout history, there’s been a constant tug of war between human motivations and interests with profitability on one end of the spectrum and exploration on the other. When becoming interplanetary, can humans break the chain, or are they doomed to repeat the same mistakes in this new world?
MARS picks up five years after the conclusion of Season 1, following the successful maiden mission to the Red Planet when the original International Mars Science Foundation (IMSF) crew struggled to safely land on and create an initial settlement. It’s now the year 2042, and IMSF has established a fully-fledged colony, Olympus Town, but they cannot finance the Mars expedition alone. Doors of opportunity have swung wide open to the private sector, but tensions arise among original mission-driven scientists and miners sent by the for-profit corporation, Lukrum Industries, which create a new world of challenges for everyone on the Red Planet.
On the scripted front, the series tackles seemingly everyday occurrences – pregnancy, break ups, new romances, epidemics, breakdowns, power outages, injuries, exercise, mealtimes and socializing. But when they occur approximately 34 million isolated miles from Earth – where there is no escape – they are anything but ordinary. And while the mission-driven scientists, who first set foot on Red Planet nine years earlier, initially are alarmed by their new neighbors, some soon find themselves understanding and comingling with ‘the other side.’ Life on Mars intensifies when scientists who are searching for new life get upended by Lukrum’s mining mission; the worst natural disaster hits home; the first-generation Martian baby enters the new world; and when loved ones draw their last breath.
The MARS cast is comprised of returning actors from Season 1 along with several newcomers, including Jihae (Mortal Engines), Jeff Hephner (Chicago Med, Code Black) and Esai Morales (Ozark, NYPD Blue).
On the documentary front, present-day vignettes draw parallels to the future happenings on Mars by looking at some of the dire issues facing Earth’s last frontier – the Arctic. This includes a spectrum of events that currently are compromising life on Earth – and could plague us in the future as we become an interplanetary species: drilling, glacial melting, rising sea level and indigenous health epidemics which surface when the permafrost melts.
On-camera experts – dubbed our ‘Big Thinkers’ – once again navigate the audience through the struggles and opportunities awaiting humans on Mars. This elite group includes some of the biggest names in human exploration, technology, the environment and social science, such as Elon Musk, SpaceX CEO; Andy Weir, bestselling author of The Martian and Artemis; Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief; Leland Melvin, former NASA astronaut; Michio Kaku, theoretical physicist and futurist; Antonia Juhasz, leading oil and energy expert; Naomi Klein, bestselling author, activist and award-winning journalist on climate change; Casey Dreier, director of space policy at the Planetary Society; Lucianne Walkowicz, Astrobiology Chair at the Kluge Center of the Library of Congress and astronomer at the Adler Planetarium; and Bill Nye, CEO of The Planetary Society.

Apparently National Geographic is not serious about producing quality television. They finally come up with an impressive, interesting, and mind challenging show and they cancel it?!
Maybe cancelling it was a reflection of the plot itself? Corporate influences of good things to end? 😉 ;(

I just saw that this was canceled. Too bad. In my opinion, the shift from season 1 to season 2, and all the holier than thou preaching about the environmental woes here on earth towards the end of season 2, doomed the show's future. I can only think that if they had stuck to Mars, and stayed away from the political posturing about climate change, pollution, etc, here, the show could have stuck around. I liked the mix of science fiction and documentary. Too bad.
Was really enjoying this series, learned a lot from the doco side and was thoroughly entertained by the drama side. Boohoo theres no series 3. Guess what's happening in Oz, shows the earth can kick back too.
Season 2 actually came to a natural conclusion as a docu-drama so I think cancelling at that point was the right move. However, a great deal of the story-line remains unanswered and, as such, I would love to see a final movie to complete the story and end with concluding statements by the Elon Musk et all rather than simply putting the brakes on. Much like Firefly concluded with the movie Serenity, perhaps Mars could be concluded with a movie titled 'Olympus Town' 'cause we need a bit of closure here, ok? 🙂
Great show but a pity second series was marred by constant global warming propaganda. Naomi Klein? Bill Nye? Greenpeace? Really? National Geographic has got to be joking.

It was an awesome series and we explained and put together by NAT GEO. The bonds of the corporate tie-up with national funds have to happen if Mission like mars to begin with, not for exploitation but for entirety of scientific community development. Sad to say no season 3 would like to see some terraforming ideas…
Sucks that this is canceled. Such a good series I really hope Netflix brings this back. I never thought I would enjoy a Documentary/ Show but I really loved it and am sad that they have decided to cancle it.
Sad I liked Mars the sci fi doc element worked well for me although was a bit preachy, It’s insane how a show like ancient aliens gets better ratings than a show like this, current reflection on humanity I guess.
That thing that presents ancient aliens should be locked up in a nut house, the show seriously belongs on Comedy Central

A brilliant show cancelled inexplicably, obviously National Geographic upset too many big wigs in Government and Industry, telling the truth will do that unfortunately. Upset Trump and his cronies and you cop it in the neck !!!
This show is too smart for Trumpsters who watch the nonsense that is aired on TV these days. They are the ones who vote for anything that is superficial and makes no sense like keeping up with the Kardashians.
I am totally upset to learn the cancellation of "Mars – season 3". This is an incredible film that is educational, exciting and fun…Too bad it's coming to an end. POLITICS AS USUAL. Hard to believe Nat. Geo. would have decided to ax it. It was like watching our future and learning how to fix our wrongs and get it right the first time around.

So hard to find such a riveting series that is so appropriate for what is happening today. Wish they would continue and discuss issues like pollution, recycling and growing population.
