ABC News Studios announced the Hulu Original documentary series “The Murders Before the Marathon.” The three-part series, based on a forthcoming book by investigative journalist and producer Susan Zalkind, follows her as she attempts to piece together the truth behind the 2011 murders of Erik Weissman, Brendan Mess and Raphael Teken in Waltham, Massachusetts. The triple homicide is believed by Zalkind to be the first murders committed by the Boston Marathon bomber, Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

Zalkind’s connection to the case is personal and professional; she was friends with Erik Weissman and raised in the Boston suburbs that were rocked by these horrific crimes.

“This is a story about three men who were murdered in Waltham, Massachusetts, on Sept. 11, 2011. The open homicide case regards a horrific slaying in a quiet suburban neighborhood. The controversy surrounding this unsolved mystery has made it all the way up to the United States Supreme Court. This case may well unlock the secrets behind a landmark terrorist event. Yet until now, little attention has been paid to the facts or the victims,” said Zalkind.

This series will be the first definitive documentary series to explore the potential connection between the triple homicide and the Boston Marathon bombing and will serve as a deep dive into the evolving nature of terror attacks, the challenges in investigating them, radicalization and the connection between crime and terror in a globalized world.

“The Murders Before the Marathon” streams on Hulu on Sept. 5, 2022. The series is directed by Jesse Sweet and executive produced by Story Syndicate, the production house founded by Oscar(R) and Emmy(R) Award-winning filmmakers Dan Cogan and Liz Garbus, as well as Anonymous Content and Matt Cook. It is produced by investigative journalist Susan Zalkind.
