The Bob Lee Swagger novels by Stephen Hunter are fantastic — heartpounding, can’t-put-it-down plots, and masterful wordsmithing. Swagger is a long-retired Marine sniper from the Vietnam era, now dealing with age as well as his old physical and emotional wounds. The movie with Mark Wahlberg was very good, though it knocked fifteen or twenty years of Swagger’s age. But this TV series transformed him into a young kid — completely unsatisfactory for any fan of Hunter’s novels, though presumably Hunter signed off on the project.
Read the books. They’re a thousand times better than this TV show was.
