What Is Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir About?

Marinette seems to be a normal teenage girl -- she dreams of becoming a fashion designer, is a bit awkward and has a crush on a classmate. But she has secret other teenagers don't have -- she lives a double life as a crime-fighting superhero known as Ladybug. She uses her superpowers to help protect her native Paris from supervillain Hawk Moth. She is assisted, reluctantly, by fellow hero Cat Noir, even though she insists she doesn't need him -- a stance she might not take if she knew his alter ego is her crush, Adrien. Together, Ladybug and Cat Noir help keep Paris safe from Hawk Moth and other villains.

Disney Branded Television has acquired two more seasons of “Miraculous — Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir,” as well as three original animated specials from ZAG studio and Method Animation, a label owned by Mediawan Kids & Family.

Currently in production, the sixth and seventh seasons, as well as the specials will roll out on Disney Channel worldwide in the fall and will go on to stream on Disney+ globally thereafter.

“Miraculous — Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir” follows the adventures of two teens with secret identities, Marinette and Adrien, who transform into superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir to save Paris from villains. The two new seasons, each consisting of 26 half-hour episodes, and the original specials are produced in collaboration with Disney Branded Television, Brazil’s Globosat, Italy’s KidsMe and France’s TF1.

The show and specials are based on the massively popular “Miraculous” franchise, which drives over 37 billion views on YouTube. The film spinoff, “Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie” launched theatrically in Europe last summer and proved to be a blockbuster, topping the box office in France and Germany. The animated feature then launched on Netflix on July 28. The “Miraculous” series has also won dozens of prizes, including best animated series at last year’s Kidscreen Awards.

Disney Channel and Disney+ in the U.S. previously acquired the first 44-minute special, “Miraculous™ World: Paris, Tales of Shadybug & Claw Noir.”

The French producers have tapped the gaming platform Unreal Engine to create new visuals for its new season and specials.

“Our audiences resonate with this coming-of-age series about ordinary kids learning the importance of believing in themselves and understanding that you don’t need to be a superhero or wear a mask to reach your dreams and overcome fears,” said Jeremy Zag, ZAG’s founder and CEO.
