Eliza Scarlet joins forces with a Scotland Yard Inspector to solve crime in 19th-century London.

Season 2 opens a few months after the conclusion of Season 1: Eliza has solved a very personal case that vexed her throughout Season 1; her relationship with William (“the Duke”) continues to slowly simmer; and she continues to face the challenges of being a female private detective in male-dominated Victorian London.

When her father dies, Eliza Scarlet finds herself facing a difficult choice. As an unmarried woman, she faces poverty without a husband to provide for her — unless she takes on the challenge of running her late father’s detective agency, which would be unthinkable for a respectable Victorian lady. Fortunately, she finds an unlikely partner in the unconventional Detective Inspector William Wellington of Scotland Yard, known as “The Duke,” and the pair begin tackling Victorian London’s crimes and mysteries together.

Who are Miss Scarlet and The Duke?

Eliza Scarlet is the whip-smart daughter of renowned London private detective Henry Scarlet, who raised her to believe she might one day follow in his footsteps. When Henry suddenly dies, a heartbroken Eliza discovers his considerable debts. Her only option for survival is to take on the family business—which shouldn’t be so hard, considering the countless childhood hours spent at her father’s side learning the latest forensic techniques and the countless hours she’s already putting in as a secret amateur sleuth! And though Victorian conventions conspire to keep Eliza—a woman!—from the private investigation, she’ll use her pluck and guile to pay the bills and keep on her feet. William Wellington, aka The Duke, was a fatherless child on London’s streets when Henry Scarlet saw promise in the boy and took him under his wing, mentoring him as he rose through the police academy to become Detective Inspector. Despite his suave demeanor, William’s wily ways and street smarts make him such a talented detective—and keep Eliza’s blood boiling! Years before, Henry tasked William with looking after Eliza, which made their long relationship…complicated. At once an authority figure and a rakish ladies’ man, William is sometimes Eliza’s protector, sometimes her competition, sometimes her adversary, and sometimes her partner. Whatever the dynamic, it’s constantly built on genuine caring and often shot through with tantalizing tension.

Renewal Update:

MASTERPIECE and Element 8 Entertainment have announced a second season of Miss Scarlet and The Duke, the famous mystery starring Kate Phillips as the fearless, first-ever female detective in Victorian London and Stuart Martin as her childhood friend and potential love interest Inspector William “The Duke” Wellington.

Almost eight million viewers tuned in to the series’ first season, which premiered on PBS in January as part of MASTERPIECE‘s 50th-anniversary lineup. It was streamed 3.6 million times.

“Miss Scarlet and The Duke was an instant fan favorite,” says Susanne Simpson, executive producer of MASTERPIECE. “Our audience couldn’t resist its lighthearted tone and the appealing characters so wonderfully portrayed by Kate Phillips and Stuart Martin. We’re delighted the show will return for a second season.”
