In the final season of TNT’s adrenaline-fueled family crime drama, the Cody boys discover that they can’t outrun their past. With their empire expanding, a cold case investigation sets off a series of events that puts the entire family in jeopardy. Revenge, betrayal, and a reckoning with long forgotten violence leads to an explosive conclusion six seasons in the making.

After a heroin overdose kills his mom, teenager Joshua “J” Cody moves to Southern California to live with his freewheeling relatives. The family’s matriarch is J’s estranged grandmother, Janine “Smurf” Cody, from whom he’s been shielded for years. J soon finds out the reason for the isolation — Smurf and “her boys” make their livings through carefully planned armed robberies and other criminal activities. Prominent perpetrators include Smurf’s three sons: mentally disturbed ex-con Pope, hyperactive drug user Craig, and suspicious Deran. In order to stay alive, J must prove loyal to his beguiling grandmother, who rules with a borderline-incestuous love.

TNT announced that the crime drama will conclude with the just-ordered sixth season. Season five, which stars Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, Finn Cole, Leila George, Rigo Sanchez and Jon Beavers, will premiere this summer on TNT.

Animal Kingdom has been off the air since its Season 4 finale was broadcast in Aug. 2019. Season 4 marked the farewell of embattled leading lady Ellen Barkin, whose alter ego, Smurf, was killed off in the penultimate episode.

In “Animal Kingdom” season five, Pope (Shawn Hatosy), Craig (Ben Robson), Deran (Jake Weary) and J (Finn Cole) are still dealing with the fallout from the events surrounding Smurf’s death, including family members out for revenge. With their kingdom without a leader, the Cody family’s struggle to maintain their fragile alliance, and to see which of them will come out on top. Meanwhile, they search for more information on Pamela Johnson whom Smurf made the beneficiary of her estate. And back in 1984, an increasingly volatile 29-year-old Smurf is forging her own path raising Pope and Julia and leading the charge on dangerous jobs with new and old friends.
